During Mitral Valve Disease, the annulus expands causing the chordae to rip. This causes the mitral valve to regulate blood inefficiently within the heart. There are three types of mitral valve diseases. Mitral Stenosis, is what happens when the valve narrows as a result of calcification. This leads to inefficient blood flow through the mitral valve. Mitral Prolapse is when the leaflets bulge causing regurgitation into the pulmonary system. Lastly there is Mitral Regurgitation, which is where the leaflets of the mitral valve do not close completely. The inability of the leaflet to close properly causes the shortness of breath that valve disease patients encounter, as blood returns to the pulmonary system increasing the pressure within your lungs.
