Degenerative Calcific Aortic Stenosis is a disease that impacts 1.5 million Americans. Of these, 500,000 Americans suffer from severe Aortic Stenosis, and an estimated 250,000 with severe Aortic Stenosis experience harmful symptoms such as shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is due to the regurgitation of blood back into the LV which makes its way into the pulmonary system and creates a high pressure gradient. A minimally invasive procedure such as a TAVR, or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement has been used to replace the Aortic Valve. However, patients need to qualify for this procedure as it cannot be done to every patient with AS. Below is a powerpoint I made about Aortic Stenosis, and a procedure that replaces the Aortic Valve.
